Mayor Danny Jones. Was he the kid that always got beat up during recess?

I've had this post buzzing around in my head for a couple weeks, but haven't been able to get motivated enough to actually post it. Well, for some reason, I've got an abundance of motivation today, so here goes.

A couple weeks ago, Danny Jones went on Micheal Agnello (Chicago Furlip to my faithful readers) and Rick Johnson's 58 Live talk show to "debate" local real estate magnate and developer Al Summers. Until that day, I'd never heard Al Summers talk. And, hopefully, I don't ever have to hear him speak again. To say that Al comes off as "not too bright" would actually be an insult to all the "not too bright" people in the world. Anyway, Danny and Al were arguing over a myriad of things; what to name the ballpark (evidently Al wants it named after himself), the east end grocery (0r lack thereof), some dispute that Al is having with one of the neighboring businesses to one of his buildings. As bad as 58 Live and Chicago Furlip is, this is one show, they should burn onto cd's and sell, it was that good (and Furlip being silent for a good chunk of the show, has a lot to do with its good quality)

Anyway, Dannyboy goes right into the gutter and brings up some federal tax problem Al had years ago, as if that has anything to do with the current issues. Al may very well be a criminal (I don't know, this federal tax thing was before my time in Charleston), who knows. But the relevance to the issues at hand, was not apparent, other than it was obvious Danny just wanted to get down in the gutter and sling mud. With "cellphone fee" Worker Tax Jones (yes, you can blame Danny for raising your cellphone fee, just so his buddies at the Charleston Visitors Bureau can all get nice big fat raises and go to more meetings in exotic locales), nothing is out of bounds.

At one point, Al begins to tell his side of the story, and Danny begins to interrupt him every 2 seconds with pithy little comments. This goes on for a LONG time, Al trying to talk, and Danny keeps interrupting. He probably interrupted him 10 or more times in the span of a couple minutes, and to Al's credit, he didn't complain. Eventually, it got to be distracting, and Johnson made a "generic" comment that people couldn't hear if they both talked at the same time (a nice way of saying, "shut your piehole, Danny"). Danny piped down. However, during Danny's rebuttal, Al tried to interrupt ONE time, and Danny IMMEDIATELY ran crying to Johnson, with something like "Are you now going to tell him not to interrupt ME?" It was actually quite pathetic, that the Mayor of Charleston, had to act like it was first grade and go running to the teacher when he felt someone was discourteous to him. The show ended (with Al dropping a "Goddamn" one time that got an immediate push of the panic button by Johnson), and it was clear Worker Tax Jones and Big Al, didn't like each other any more than they did when they started the show.

Then like a week or so later, Worker Tax Jones is on Hoppy's (or maybe it was Furlip's show, I forget) show, along with Denise Giardina arguing about the Massey picnic possibly coming back to Charleston. Giardina is against it because she says it fouls up the traffic patterns on the east end's neighborhoods to close down the Boulevard by Magic Island (plus other reasons). Worker Tax thinks it's ok and wants Massey to come back. They basically took shots at each other for a couple minutes, and then Jones said something, and Giardina quickly tried to correct him, and Jones stopped and said to the host "Are you going to tell her not to interrupt me?"

Does anyone else remember there was always this little kid on the playground, who was always running crying to the teacher because someone was mean to them? Usually that little kid was the one who was always getting his ass beat for being a crybaby. I bet Danny remembers.
